Why did Radio 4’s Today let a Trump backer lie continually without challenge?

Justin Webb allowed Matt Schlapp to toss out a series of obvious untruths involving Elon Musk, Hillary Clinton and the January 6 riots

Donald Trump would have loved the Today programme’s interview with Republican activist Matt Schlapp on Monday morning – and that shows what a disaster it was.

In a three-minute interview with Justin Webb on Radio 4’s flagship news show, the chairman of the right wing American Conservative Union was allowed to spout a series of bizarre lies without any challenge. These included false claims…

That Donald Trump has “social media oligarchs” stacked against him, despite the fact that Twitter owner Elon Musk has donated £91million to his campaign and is heavily involved in the Republicans’ get out the vote operation;

That “the violence we’ve seen in this country comes from the left”, despite the January 6 riot and assault on the Capitol and the Charlottesville car attack;

That Hillary Clinton “did not accept the results” of the 2016 election, despite her phoning Trump to concede on the night of the election;

That Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, who has withdrawn from political funding in this election, is funding the Democrats’ campaign;

That campaign funding in American politics is “all on the left”, when the Republicans have been able to spend £3.2bn on TV adverts in this election (the Democrats have spent £3.86bn);

That the American media “is trying everything they can to make Kamala Haris win” – even after high-profile Harris endorsements were cancelled by the Washington Post and LA Times; and

That Liz Cheney, a former Republican congresswoman turned Harris campaigner who currently holds no political office, is “putting all our sons and daughters and grandsons and granddaughters in harm’s way in [global] conflicts”.

Webb also did not mention that a Republican operative who accused Schlapp of sexual assault last year received £370,000 after dropping his lawsuit.

Schlapp has said that the claims were amplified by a “left wing media that is focused on the destruction of conservatives regardless of the truth”.

He can hardly make the same claim about Webb’s abysmally toothless interview.
