GB News presenter Darren Grimes’ X feed is usually a 24/7 feed of anti-immigration diatribes, from nudge-nudge innuendos to barely disguised xenophobia.
In the past few days alone he’s suggested home secretary Yvette Cooper is unfit to “keep our girls safe” because she once posed with a sign saying ‘refugees welcome’, claimed somehow any rollback on voter ID laws would “give millions of foreigners the right to vote” and repeated a lie about Welsh schoolchildren being used in a video to encourage migrants to move to the country.
Things are different, however, when it comes to football. After Swedish striker Alexander Isak scored twice for Newcastle United this week to beat Wolves 3-0, the Toon-supporting Grimes posted: “Alexander Isak is one of life’s greatest pleasures.”
Might this be the same Isak whose parents fled to Sweden from civil war-torn Eritrea in the 1980s, bringing up a son who has scored 15 goals in 50 appearances for Sweden’s national team while also speaking proudly of his east African heritage? It is indeed!
Hypocrisy is nothing new for Grimes, incidentally, when it comes to his football club. While posting increasingly hysterical anti-Islam content on his X feed, he has remained curiously silent on its 2021 sale to Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, the sovereign wealth fund of a murderous theocratic dictatorship.
As they say, it’s a funny old game!
