The New European newspaper today launches a new podcast, The Two Matts, featuring two The New European journalists, Matt d’Ancona and Matt Kelly – find it here.
Kelly, founder and editor-in-chief of the pro-Europe title and d’Ancona, TNE editor-at-large and former Spectator editor, will focus on news and media current affairs and promise to shed light into dark corners of politics and publishing.
In the first episode, with the Brexit Referendum now seven years ago, Matt and Matt rake the coals searching for the glimmer of good news in amongst the procession of bad. Spoiler alert: They fail.
Also discussed: the incredible contrast between five rich people in a submarine and 700 poor people in a boat on the Med. And is Matt K the worst parent on the planet? It’s possible.
Matt Kelly said. “Yes, we are absolutely jumping on the bandwagon of high-quality conversational podcasts about current affairs in the UK. In terms of format, I can promise there will be absolutely nothing original about The Two Matts. But if your desire for entertaining, enlightening audio remains unsatiated, then look no further.”
Matt d’Ancona, previously an editor of Tortoise Media and deputy editor of the Sunday Telegraph, said: “As a relative newcomer to TNE, I think it does something no other title does, in a style that owes as much to tabloid chutzpah as to fine writing. The podcast will reflect that spirit. In particular, we share a frustration at the earnestness of much podcasting and commentary on the progressive side of the tracks. There has to be a sense of wit and – an unexpectedly big deal these days – a readiness to say what you think without agonising about what Twitter will say. What Dave Chappelle calls the duty to be a bit reckless.”
The podcast, produced by a third Matt – Matt Hill from Rethink Audio, the production company behind a host of chart-topping podcasts including Happy Place and Tales of Silicon Valley as well as Page 94: The Private Eye Podcast – launched today and is available on all podcast platforms. A video version is hosted by YouTube.
