Šefčovič: It’s time we got Brexit done

The ongoing impasse over the Northern Ireland protocol is in no one’s interest, the European Commission's vice president has said

“It is high time we got Brexit done.” No, those are not the words of Boris Johnson, but of Maroš Šefčovič, the European Commission’s vice president, who sees the ongoing impasse as being in no one’s interest.

In a speech at Bloomberg’s HQ in London, the grandee ruefully recalled David Cameron’s speech in the same place nine years ago. Unsurprisingly, most of Cameron’s quotes were received with giggles from the audience, especially when Šefčovič quoted the former prime minister talking about how he couldn’t argue against the policy of “simply hoping a difficult situation will go away”.

Šefčovič may have a lot to gain from solving the current Brexit impasse in terms of the Northern Ireland Protocol, at least that’s what Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York, thinks. “If the vice president can successfully resolve the current Brexit impasse, he may be in line for the Nobel peace prize”, Bloomberg joked in his opening remarks.
