Opera’s latest critic is no critic

Nicholas Kenton's appointment as the Daily Telegraph's opera critic surprised MANDRAKE. Mostly as Kenton used to serve on the board of the English National Opera

Nicholas Kenyon, until last year the long-time managing director of the Barbican Centre, rather surprisingly became opera critic of the Daily Telegraph last September.

So far, his reviews have been friendly, particularly towards the English National Opera.

Kenyon gave four stars to its latest production of The Cunning Little Vixen, while others only gave three at most. Kenyon, it should be pointed out, used to serve on the board of ENO and is still credited as being on the directors emeriti committee. I’m sure this does not prejudice his reviews.
