Michael Gove’s up to his old tricks

The prime minister's old rival, after helpfully advising his tactless remarks on Ukraine, is once again out on manoeuvres

After I disclosed last week how Michael Gove had less than helpfully advised Boris Johnson to equate the people who voted for Brexit with the freedom fighters of Ukraine, the PM’s old rival is once again out on manoeuvres.

To the extent Gove has a reliable mouthpiece in national newspapers, it’s almost certainly Tim Shipman of The Sunday Times, who, over the weekend, quoted him admonishing cabinet colleagues for laying into Rishi Sunak for “global economic conditions beyond his control”.

Gove has always had a soft spot for fabulously rich men – Rupert Murdoch, Lord Harris, Roman Abramovich etc – so it’s hardly surprising he should now be throwing in his lot with Sunak. If Sunak manages to win the current fight to the death with Johnson, then expect his unctuous little helper to be his chancellor.
