It is not just Sir Keir Starmer’s strong polling against Liz Truss that must be depressing Kerry-Anne Mendoza, the former editor of the left wing Canary website and fierce critic of the Labour leader. She recently tweeted: “Sir Keith [how she refers to Starmer] couldn’t slap his own arse unless his donors said he could.”
Last week Mendoza saw staff at the Canary – which she edited up until September last year – take charge of the title and say they plan to run it as a co-operative. Long-time Canary writer Steve Topple claimed there had been a “culture of hierarchy and narcissism” under the old management, and there are further allegations that while under the Mendoza regime, directors were supposed to be paid £13 an hour, editors £12 an hour and writers £11 an hour, those at the top paid themselves extra money via dividends and director’s loans, as well as enjoying better pension contributions.
Nancy Mendoza, co-founder of the title and Mendoza’s wife, left it in June. Kerry-Anne has described events at the Canary as “a debacle”.
