While researching Theresa May’s character for my play Bloody Difficult Women, I heard from multiple sources that the former PM finds Boris Johnson so depressing that she asks that no one around her uses his name. That made it into the play.
Still, Johnson’s name repeatedly came up during my research. One of May’s former ministers told me, when I asked what her long-term strategy to her successor was going to be, that “she takes the view revenge is a dish best served cold”. Those words make me think it can only be a matter of time before May gets up on her hind legs in the Commons to deliver the coup de grâce.
Happily, Jessica Turner will be reprising her role as May when the play opens at the Assembly Rooms for the Edinburgh festival on August 5.
