The Daily Mail boss Lord Rothermere’s seemingly eccentric decision to praise Chris Evans, the editor of the Daily Telegraph, in a recent interview finally makes sense… Mandrake hears Evans may be heading back to the Mail, where he once worked on the news desk.
“Rothermere isn’t happy with the take up of the Mail app and this is what’s behind this attempt to poach him as the Telegraph’s app has been a lot more successful,” my informant says. “Whether this means the removal of Ted Verity, the Daily Mail’s current editor, is far from clear at the moment, but I can’t imagine he’s feeling very secure right now.”
The move follows the Mail’s decision to put some of its content behind a paywall and I’m told it may well hinge on whether the increasing power hungry UAE succeed in their highly controversial takeover of the Telegraph.
Rothermere is also planning to bring back the DailyMail.com editor-in-chief Gerard Greaves from New York as part of his reshuffle.
