A new non-partisan campaign aiming to get young people registering to vote is set to use dating and social networking platforms to boost turnout at the European elections.
Founded by prominent young supporters from both sides of the EU debate earlier this month, the Vote For Your Future campaign has already been endorsed by several well-known figures, among them comedian Nish Kumar and the broadcasters Stephen Fry and Gary Lineker.
The project is trying to increase the proportion of voters among 18- to 34-year-olds by using a mixture of digital advertising and traditional campaigning techniques.
Using platforms such as the social networking app, Bumble, the campaign hopes to achieve 15-20 million views of its content before the EU elections are held on May 23.
Ellie Varley, a young Brexiteer, who is one of the campaign’s founders said: ‘The current political climate has afforded many young people an incredible platform in which they can make their voices heard.
‘There have been dynamic movements from all sides of the Brexit divide that show young people are becoming more involved in politics.
‘However, it is important that we don’t forget the first means in which we as citizens can ensure our voices are heard and represented and that is through voting. Make sure you’re registered to vote by May 7,’ she said.
Bella Frimpong, a young supporter of a People’s Vote campaign, added: ‘It doesn’t matter who you’re voting for, what matters is that you vote. Every election is decided by those who show up. A third of young people aren’t even registered to vote.
‘At Vote For Your Future, we encourage everyone from all political backgrounds to get registered by May 7.’
