Marching on: Thousands take to streets to stop Brexit

Protests at the weekend in London, Cambridge, Bristol, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Birmingham, Nottingham, Liverpool, Reading, Cardiff and York kept the pressure on the government to listen to growing concerns over leaving the European Union.

In the capital members of Number 10 Vigil for Victory staged a mock funeral procession along Whitehall passing Downing Street.

One of the biggest rallies was held in Edinburgh where speakers included Labour MP Ian Murray and his SNP counterpart Tommy Sheppard.

Mr Murray said: ‘The economic consequences of what this government are about to embark on are disastrous for this country, and actually pretty disastrous for our European neighbours as well.

‘The only way we can stop that from happening is to stay with the customs union and the single market.’

In London Labour’s Heidi Alexander addressed the crowds.
