Tweet them, email them and engage with them – do not stop
Many of them – a majority in fact – did not want the UK to leave the European Union, and many represent constituencies which also strongly voted against Brexit.
And yet, because their parties are insisting on a whipped vote on the issue, and because of the false mantra that the current version of Brexit somehow represents the ‘will of the people’, many of those MPs are now under intense pressure to approve the triggering of Article 50.
But we want to challenge that mantra, to show that there is not unanimity in the country for this course of action and to steer Britain away from the consequences of an ultra Hard Brexit.
Readers can help do that, by lobbying the MPs listed here. We have identified them not because we believe them to be hypocrites or because we think they are bad at their jobs.
Rather, we have selected them because they all backed Remain and represent constituencies which also backed Remain. And, crucially, they are all in marginal constituencies, so are going to be the most receptive to the lobbying of their voters.
All those we list here have majorities far smaller than Zac Goldsmith, the Tory leaver toppled by an anti-Brexit candidate. These MPs must know that the ‘will of their people’, is anti-Brexit and worth heeding.
Last week in The New European Professor AC Grayling sent out a rallying cry to the 48% to organise and resist. He said: ‘The best way to stop Brexit is for our MPs to vote it down in Parliament. Write to your MP and all MPs, and keep writing.
‘MPs will tell you that their staff simply bin letters and emails when there are too many of them on the same subject. Do not let that deter you. Keep writing and emailing until those bins are so repeatedly full every day, and those email inboxes are so overflowing every day, day after day without cease, that they have to sit up and take notice of the very real, very deep, very persistent and passionate opposition to Brexit around the country.’
We hope that some on this list – and others without the pressures of small majorities – will defy their parties and oppose Article 50 for the good of the people they directly represent and the wider public.
Some are calling for a final vote to be held at the end of any Brexit negotiations – and that is admirable – but the time for action is now.
